You'll see that people have been prophecying the end of the world since the day the world was born.
@LostGeneration: I checked out the thread you suggested. Thanks
after looking at the latest 2011 "god's gonna cut you down" district convention invite, i found myself getting a strange and familiar feeling.
back when i was mentally in the borg, i used to actually get a bit intimidated by the "fire & brimstone" message on these things.
and now that i've mentally unshackled myself, i am beginning to see the deep-seated psychological effect that a lifetime of dogma has infused in me.

" at the bottom of the image on the back of the invitation raises some eyebrows, but last night in the routine district convention article during the service meeting, i caught that one of the paragraphs mentioned that we would be encouraged to keep a copy of the tract in hand for a discussion during sunday's last talk.
my guess is, there is going to be some new revelation about what the "?
" represents, or some other fangled idea.
I'm just sat in front of my computor asking:
Did I REALLY sit through all those assemblies?
Did I REALLY go to all those meetings?
Did I REALLY get excited, cueing up to buy that literature?
I think it must have been somebody else.
i can't even believe what's happened.
i'm really in shock.. without any warning i got an email from my son yesterday afternoon.
"ive been doing a lot of thinking lately, and i have decided i no longer want to be a jehovah's witness.
Things seem to really be coming together for you HIS. Thats good news.
A little suggestion from my own experience:
I always told my children:
"Your mum will say that everything is my fault, and of course, I will think that it is hers. All of that is normal.
The one thing that is certain is: we could no longer go on living together, because we were too different."
That way, I avoided entering into a war in the childrens minds. I believe they appreciated that.
with the royal wedding in the news,.
has your perspective of the royal family, her majesty the queen, the national anthem, and maybe politics in general, changed since you left the borg?.
even if you're not british, would you say you are more patriotic now?.
So for me the royals are PARASITES...
But the wedding ( taking one example) has brought a great sum of money into the British economy,
one that will have benefited the "common man", dont you think?
Isn't it rather a symbiotic relationship nowadays?

so my story, just like everyone elses that has left, is one of confusion , hurt, and lots of mixed emotions, .
i was raised a witness, and at the age of 20ish bent to pressure from the elders and got baptised, my heart was never in it, not even as a child, it was more jsut the motions of it, because thats what you were taught your whole life to do.
about a year after being baptised, i met a a young lady that opened my eyes, while she wasnt in my life long, (dont blame her, i had a lot to deal with , family, elders, etc) she was my saving grace, in the "truth" i was depressive, lonely, :( .

wow...in quite the funk.
there are so many thoughts and memories that swirl in my head when i come on this site i wouldn't know where to start.
my mother was inactive for a bit, we got along famously!!!
Hello scooterspank.
I can understand your concern, and am pleased that you and your mum have been able to have fun together.
It is not always the case.
I feel that all of the fun my mother and I found is going to be sucked out by the org
Have you got some special old photos, memories of " the good times"?
Why not make an evening together, sharing these memories, doing something together as well ( restaurant/cinema?).
Maybe your mum will realise what she might be asked to give up.
Good luck, and feel free to rant a little here.
1873 [six thousand years of man's existence ends in a.d. 1873] {wr apr 1880 88}.
1873 "here we furnish the evidence that from the creation of adam to a.d. 1873 was six thousand years.
and though the bible contains no direct statement that the seventh thousand will be the epoch of christ's reign, the great sabbath day of restitution to the world, yet the venerable tradition is not without reasonable foundation.. if, then, the seventh thousand-year period of earth's history be an epoch specially noted as the period of christ's reign, we shall, by showing that it began in a.d. 1873, be proving that we are already in it.
1972 "Does this admission of making mistakes stamp them [Watchtower] as false prophets? Not at all, for false prophets do not admit to making mistakes." {WT Nov 1 1972 644}
Once again, not a very logical argument.
If, in 1976, the wtbs did not admit to making a mistake about the end in 1975, then they would have looked really really stupid ( instead of just stupid).
There is a guy driving around in a van saying the end is coming on 21 may 2011.(see other threads)
On the 22 May he will no doubt admit that he has made a mistake.
By Watchtower logic, that makes him a true prophet.
....that made you decide to leave the botchtower society?
.
I cant remember the exact title: something like JWs in the 20 Century?
Anyway, whilst everone else was raving about how faith strengthening,
I was thinking, so 100 years ago they were saying the end is iminent, and were often abused, persecuted, etc for their faith.
And now they are all dead, and even their children are dead.
And what about me in 100 years time? Is all that I'm sacrificing a waste of my time and life?
I think so. So the only answer was to leave. Once the seed sown.........................
well, it just sort of came to me while i was driving.. the doctrine of new light is a false analogy.. why had i not considered this before?.
here is what i'm thinking; see if you don't agree.... jehovah's witnesses are divided into three distinct tiers of membership.. 1.governing body anointed.
2.clueless anointed.
Nice analogy Terry.
That makes me think of Moses.
If Moses had made so many mistakes when he went before Pharoah, Israel would still be in Egypt.
When Gods prophets in the bible said something, they got it right first time and you'd better believe what they
said or else.
Making all those re-interpretations just gets God a bad name.
